Hip pain and arthritis

Evaluation of hip pain, stiffness, arthritis, walking difficulty, and treatment options

Hip pain can affect walking, sleep, work, and independence. Causes may include arthritis, tendon irritation, impingement, trauma, or referred pain from nearby areas.

When it may be considered

  • Groin, thigh, buttock, or side-of-hip pain
  • Difficulty walking, putting on shoes, or climbing stairs
  • Known arthritis or previous hip injury

Visit notes

  • X-rays and examination are often important for treatment planning
  • Non-surgical care may be suitable for many patients
  • When surgery is considered, benefits, risks, and recovery expectations should be reviewed clearly
